Managing editor

Managing Editor

At Ritza, we're looking for a full-time managing editor to help produce technical content (documentation, guides, and blog posts related to software engineering, DevOps, cloud computing, machine learning, and more).

Who we are

Ritza is a technical writing agency. We create documentation, blog posts, guides, ebooks, and other technical materials, usually for software engineers. We cover topics like software engineering, machine learning, DevOps, and related fields. We've created some of the best content on the internet for some of the best startups, like Replit, Sourcegraph, and Sentry, among others.

We work fully remotely, but most of the team is based in South Africa, where we meet up in person at least once a year.

We've been operating for five years. We're currently a team of around 10 people (working full- and part-time) supported by a network of freelancers and contractors.

The managing editor role

We're looking for an experienced managing editor to:

  • Edit technical content. You should be an expert at different kinds of editing, and you should not be scared of learning enough technical terminology to be able to effectively work with content on everything from JavaScript to Kubernetes. You should be willing to onboard to technical tools like GitHub and Markdown, which we use as part of our publishing process. You should be comfortable doing everything from proofreading to structural reworking and overwriting: whatever is needed to get our drafts over the finish line.
  • Manage subeditors. You should be comfortable in a team-lead role, delegating editing work to subeditors while ensuring our quality bar is maintained.
  • Manage and train writers. Our writers work mainly autonomously, but the managing editor also works closely with them where necessary, whether chasing up a deadline, collaborating on the finishing touches on a draft, or coaching and training them to help hone their craft.
  • Manage our publishing pipelines. Each of our drafts goes through several stages before being shipped to our customers. You should be comfortable keeping track of all the moving pieces to know where drafts are and what needs to be done, nudging stuff along where necessary. You'll also be responsible for keeping track of hours and word counts to ensure we meet our contractual commitments to all customers.

Requirements

  • 5+ years editing experience, preferably in a similar context (software development content)
  • 2+ years experience with team leadership and people management
  • 2+ years experience with project management
  • Available to work 09:00 to 17:00 South African Standard Time
  • Comfortable working in a remote setting, using tools like Slack and Zoom to coordinate

What you'll like about Ritza

We've been around for a while (5+ years), but we're still small (~10 people, a mix of full and part time). This means we've outgrown the chaos and instability of the early days of a small business, but we're still small enough to have personality. We don't have complicated hierarchies or pointless processes. We all love getting stuff done, and take pride in the quality of what we create.

We're very transparent about how we work. You can read more about that in our public handbook (that you're on right now). Take a look at our principles and editing section especially.
